Cost Per Lead (CPL)

What it is

Cost Per Lead is exactly what it sounds like — how much you spend on marketing to generate one lead. If you run a $1,000 ad campaign and it produces 20 leads, your CPL is $50. It's a simple metric but an essential one for evaluating whether your marketing channels are working efficiently. CPL varies wildly by industry, channel, and offer quality.

Why it matters

CPL tells you where your marketing dollars are actually going. Without it, you're guessing which channels work. With it, you can cut what's expensive and underperforming and double down on what delivers leads at a cost that makes sense for your business.

The mistake most people make

Optimizing for the lowest CPL without caring about lead quality. A $10 lead that never converts is more expensive than a $100 lead that closes into a $10,000 client. Always track CPL alongside close rate and revenue per lead — cost in isolation tells you very little.
