Scope Creep

What it is

Scope creep is what happens when a project gradually expands beyond its original agreed-upon boundaries — more pages added to the website, more revisions than contracted, more deliverables tacked on as the project progresses — without a corresponding adjustment to the timeline or budget.

Why it matters

Scope creep is one of the leading reasons projects go over budget, take longer than expected, and end in frustration on both sides. It's rarely intentional — it usually starts with a small, reasonable-seeming request. But every "can you just also..." that isn't scoped and priced is a promise made at someone's expense.

The mistake most people make

Thinking a good relationship makes a formal scope unnecessary. Good client relationships are built on clarity, not on goodwill absorbing ambiguity. The clearer your scope is upfront — in writing, with specifics — the easier it is to have the conversation when something falls outside it. A scope isn't distrust. It's respect.
