Discovery Phase

What it is

A discovery phase is a structured period at the start of an engagement — before any design, development, or campaign work begins — where you deeply research the client's business, goals, audience, competitive landscape, and technical requirements. The output is a clear, documented strategic foundation for the work ahead.

Why it matters

Projects built without a discovery phase are built on assumptions. The discovery phase replaces assumptions with facts. It surfaces critical information that would otherwise derail the project mid-stream, aligns all stakeholders on what success looks like, and almost always reveals something the client hadn't considered that changes the approach for the better.

The mistake most people make

Skipping it to save time or money — and then spending twice as long fixing work built on the wrong foundation. Discovery is insurance. Paying for two weeks of discovery is dramatically cheaper than rebuilding a website or relaunching a campaign because the strategy was wrong from day one. Front-load the thinking.
