Term #185

Statement of Work (SOW)

What it is

A statement of work is a formal document that outlines the specific deliverables, timelines, milestones, responsibilities, and terms for a project or engagement. It defines exactly what will be done, by whom, by when, and for what price — and it serves as the reference point if there's ever a disagreement about what was agreed to.

Why it matters

An SOW protects everyone. It gives the client clarity on what they're getting. It gives the agency or vendor clarity on what's expected. When scope questions arise — and they always do — the SOW is the document you return to. It's not bureaucracy; it's the foundation of a professional working relationship.

The mistake most people make

Treating the SOW as a formality to rush through. The time to have hard conversations about deliverables, revision limits, approval processes, and what happens if the project changes is before the work starts, not during it. A thorough SOW written upfront is almost always worth more than the time spent writing it — measured in avoided arguments alone.
