Sales Qualified Lead (SQL)

What it is

A Sales Qualified Lead is a lead that marketing has vetted and sales has accepted as a genuine opportunity worth pursuing — someone who has the budget, the authority to decide, a real need, and a realistic timeline. An SQL is further down the funnel than an MQL. Where an MQL says "this person seems interested," an SQL says "this person is worth a real conversation."

Why it matters

SQLs represent the actual revenue potential in your pipeline. Tracking how many MQLs convert to SQLs tells you how well your marketing is attracting the right kind of people — not just the most people. It's the alignment metric between your marketing team and your sales effort.

The mistake most people make

Skipping the qualification step entirely and treating every lead like an SQL. Every lead gets a call, every call goes long, and nobody closes because the quality isn't there. Build a qualification process — even a simple one — and let it protect your time.
