What it is
TOFU, MOFU, and BOFU describe the three stages of the marketing funnel — and the type of content or messaging appropriate for each. Top of Funnel is awareness: reaching people who have a problem but don't know you yet. Middle of Funnel is consideration: nurturing people who know you exist and are weighing their options. Bottom of Funnel is decision: talking to people who are close to buying and need the final push to choose you.
Why it matters
The content that works at the top of the funnel will repel people at the bottom, and vice versa. A first-time visitor doesn't want a sales pitch; a warm lead who's been following you for months doesn't want a basic explainer. Matching message to funnel stage is the difference between content that moves people and content that annoys them.
The mistake most people make
Creating only BOFU content — case studies, testimonials, pricing pages — while neglecting the TOFU content that fills the funnel in the first place. If you're only talking to people ready to buy, you're constantly chasing a thin slice of the market. The top of the funnel is where future customers start.
