Heatmap

What it is

A heatmap is a visual representation of where visitors click, scroll, and spend time on a web page. Hot colors (red, orange) show high activity; cool colors (blue, green) show low activity. Tools like Hotjar and Microsoft Clarity generate these overlays on top of your actual pages.

Why it matters

Heatmaps show you what analytics alone can't tell you — not just whether people are leaving, but where they're getting stuck, what they're ignoring, and what they're drawn to. They're one of the most revealing tools for diagnosing why a page isn't converting and knowing exactly what to fix.

The mistake most people make

Not using them at all — or only looking at click heatmaps and ignoring scroll maps. Scroll maps show how far down the page most visitors actually get. If your most important content and your call to action are below where 70% of visitors stop scrolling, that's the problem. Scroll maps reveal what most people never see.
