What it is

Ad spend is the total amount of money you put into paid advertising over a given period — separate from any agency fees or management costs. If you pay $2,000/month to run ads, your ad spend is $2,000. That money goes directly to the platform (Google, Meta, etc.).

Why it matters

Ad spend is your fuel. Too little and you won't get enough data to optimize. Too much without the right targeting and you're just burning money. Getting the budget right — and knowing what to expect from it — is one of the most important parts of running paid campaigns.

The mistake most people make

Treating ad spend as an expense instead of an investment. If every $1 you put in returns $4, you should be looking for ways to put more in — not cutting the budget. Track your returns, then make decisions from the numbers.
