Backlinks

What it is

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. When an external site links to your page, it's passing some of its authority and credibility to you — in Google's eyes, it's a vote of confidence. Not all backlinks are equal: a link from a major news outlet is worth vastly more than a link from a random blog that nobody reads.

Why it matters

Backlinks remain one of the most powerful ranking factors in SEO. They're a proxy for trust — sites that other credible sites link to must be worth something. Without backlinks, even the best content struggles to rank against competitors who've built link authority over time.

The mistake most people make

Buying cheap backlinks from link farms or participating in link schemes. Google is very good at spotting these, and the penalties are severe. A manual penalty from Google can tank your rankings overnight — and recovering from it is a long, painful process. Earn links the honest way.
