What it is
Keyword cannibalization happens when multiple pages on your own website compete against each other for the same keyword or search query. Instead of one strong page ranking for a term, you have two or three weaker pages splitting the authority and confusing Google about which one to show. Your pages are eating each other's lunch.
Why it matters
When your content cannibalizes itself, none of your pages ranks as well as a single consolidated page would. You're dividing your backlinks, click signals, and relevance across multiple pages instead of concentrating all that power in one authoritative result. It's a common problem that's entirely self-inflicted.
The mistake most people make
Creating a new page or blog post for every variation of a topic without checking whether they already have content targeting that keyword. Over time, an uncoordinated content strategy produces a bloated site full of competing pages — and a confusing, inconsistent experience for both Google and your visitors.
