Above the Fold

What it is

"Above the fold" refers to everything visible on your webpage before a visitor has to scroll — what they see the instant the page loads. The phrase comes from newspapers, where the stories above the physical fold of the paper got the most attention.

Why it matters

You have about three seconds to make someone want to stay on your site. What's above the fold does that job. If your headline, your value proposition, and a clear next step aren't visible immediately, you're gambling with every visit.

The mistake most people make

Cramming too much above the fold. Trying to say everything in that space ends up communicating nothing. One sharp headline, one clear line of supporting copy, one strong visual, one call to action — that's the formula. Everything else can scroll.
