Content Hierarchy

What it is

Content hierarchy is the visual and structural order in which information is presented on a page — what's biggest, boldest, and most prominent (most important) versus what's smaller, lighter, and less prominent (supporting detail). It guides the visitor's eye in a deliberate sequence.

Why it matters

People don't read web pages — they scan them. Content hierarchy is what makes scanning useful. When hierarchy is clear, someone can skim your page and immediately understand what you do, who it's for, and what to do next. When hierarchy is absent, everything competes for attention and nothing wins.

The mistake most people make

Making everything the same visual weight because everything feels important. When everything is emphasized, nothing is emphasized. A page where six headlines are all the same size, bold, and colored the same way communicates no priority — and confused visitors don't convert.
