Mobile-First Design

What it is

Mobile-first design means designing for the smallest screen first and working your way up to desktop — not the other way around. It's a philosophy as much as a technique: prioritize what matters most because you have the least space to work with.

Why it matters

When you design desktop-first and shrink down, you end up making compromises. When you design mobile-first and scale up, you end up making decisions. Most of your visitors are on their phones. Starting there forces you to cut the fluff and lead with what actually matters.

The mistake most people make

Treating mobile as an afterthought — getting the desktop design perfect and then just hoping it "collapses nicely" on a phone. That's not a design process, that's wishful thinking. Mobile-first is how serious websites are built today.
