Anchor Text

What it is

Anchor text is the clickable, visible text of a hyperlink — the words that are highlighted and underlined when someone links to a page. From an SEO perspective, anchor text is a signal to search engines about what the linked page is about. If dozens of sites link to your page using the anchor text "emergency plumber Chicago," Google gets a very clear message about what that page covers.

Why it matters

Anchor text helps search engines confirm the relevance of a page for specific keywords. A diverse, natural anchor text profile — with a mix of branded terms, keyword-rich phrases, and generic text — strengthens your rankings without raising algorithmic red flags. It's a subtle but meaningful part of how link authority flows across the web.

The mistake most people make

Over-optimizing anchor text — using the exact target keyword as the anchor text on every backlink pointing to a page. This looks manipulative to Google and can trigger a penalty. Natural link profiles have varied anchor text. When every link says the exact same thing, it looks like a scheme, because it usually is one.
