Grid System

What it is

A grid system is an invisible framework of columns and rows that designers use to align and organize elements on a page. It's the underlying structure that makes a layout feel ordered and intentional rather than random. Most web grids use 12 columns because 12 divides evenly into halves, thirds, quarters, and sixths.

Why it matters

A grid creates visual consistency across every page of your site. When elements align to the same invisible structure, the site looks coherent and trustworthy. When they don't, the site looks like it was assembled by four different people with no communication — because it probably was.

The mistake most people make

Ignoring the grid entirely and placing elements by feel or guesswork. This is how you end up with text that doesn't align with images, margins that are different on every section, and a site that looks slightly "off" even when the individual pieces are fine.
