Social Listening

What it is

Social listening is the practice of monitoring social media platforms, review sites, and online forums for mentions of your brand, your competitors, your industry keywords, and conversations relevant to your business — then using what you learn to inform your strategy.

Why it matters

Social listening tells you what people actually think, say, and need — unfiltered. You'll find out what your competitors are getting wrong (opportunity for you), what your customers love and hate, and what questions keep coming up in your space. That's market research you don't have to pay a firm to conduct.

The mistake most people make

Only monitoring their own brand name. The best intelligence often comes from watching competitor mentions and industry conversations. When people complain about a competitor publicly, they're essentially handing you a sales pitch. Pay attention to what your market is saying, not just what they're saying about you.
