What it is

Vanity metrics are numbers that look impressive but don't connect to actual business outcomes — follower count, total page likes, raw impression numbers, and social media "reach" that never leads to a click, a call, or a sale. They feel good to report and don't tell you much worth knowing.

Why it matters

Reporting on vanity metrics without context creates the illusion of progress. A business can grow its Instagram following by 10,000 people and see zero change in revenue. What matters is whether your marketing is generating leads, clients, and revenue — not whether your follower count went up.

The mistake most people make

Letting agencies or employees report on vanity metrics without connecting them to business results. If someone's showing you a deck full of impressions and follower growth with no mention of leads, conversions, or revenue — ask the harder question. Pretty graphs should point to real outcomes, or they're just decoration.
